Stiltsville, FL - House on Pilings

A house on pilings in Stiltsville, a kind of outlaw watery town off Key Biscayne, a barrier island town across the Rickenbacker Causeway from Miami, Florida. This simple wood structure, and about ten other surviving wooden shacks from what were once several dozen (until Hurricane Betsy in 1965 wiped out many), date to the early 1930s, when their owners built them far enough offshore that drinking and gambling would be untouched by the law. Stiltsville houses became popular retreats even for the wealthy, who enjoyed seeing how “the other half” lived and partied. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2020.
