Virginia City, MT - Boot Hill Cemetery

Boot Hill was Virginia City, Montana's first cemetery, located along a ridge top overlooking the town. Some of the first buried here were the five outlaws hanged by Montana Vigilantes on January 14, 1864. Afterwards, residents who lost loved ones were reluctant to bury them alongside the criminals. Other families, who already had family members in the Boothill Cemetery, moved them to the “New” Cemetery, which was created in 1868. Photo by Kathy Alexander.
