Virginia City, MT - Dance & Stuart General Merchandise

Dance & Stuart General Merchandise in Virginia City, Montana. The mercantile is a reconstructed building. Club Foot George Lane, who was hanged by the Montana Vigilantes, was arrested in the original Dance and Stuart Store in 1864. The Montana Historical Society was founded here in 1865. Delicate arches and decorative medallions illustrate how popular urban architectural elements were adapted to wood on the frontier. Photo by Kathy Alexander.
