Beach scene in the Coney Island neighborhood in
New York City's Brooklyn borough. The peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and historic amusement park on Long Island Sound was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, several amusement parks were also built at the location. They were among the first and most popular subjects of early post cards that popularized such beaches and parks across America. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2018.
