Courtyard in Sky City, one of four Native American communities that make up Acoma Pueblo in north central New Mexico, where a “pueblo” can be a village or one of the 23 sovereign tribes (similar to tribal nations in neighboring Arizona). Acoma people have lived in the high, rocky area for more than 2,000 years, making Acoma the oldest continuously occupied place in the United States. Access to the pueblo, high on a sheer mesa, is difficult and carefully regulated by the community. Photo by Carol Highsmith 2008.
