Mural by Randy Ortiz Martinez depicting iconic local lowrider Noland Martinez in Española, a small city northwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico. A lowrider is a customized, colorfully decorated car with a chassis that has been lowered so that it barely clears the ground. Modifiers of such cars may also be called by that name. The style was popularized in California as an expression of what the historyaccess.com site calls "the pride and playfulness of Mexican American culture." Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
