The small south-central New Mexico town of Carrizozo, population 1,000 or so (as of 2021), was a modestly thriving railroad hub for a time. But when the railroad went elsewhere, the town declined, only to revive in the early 21st Century, when more than 70 artists — including Marc Cohen and his wife, Julia Daniella, left — took up residence. They are masked here because New Mexico was a hot spot during a worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
