Taos Mountain, known locally as Pueblo Peak, may not look like it towers over the valley outside Taos, New Mexico, once a sleepy southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains town, inhabited by Native Americans for centuries, that has grown into an art colony, filled with museums and dozens of shops, that is now a worldwide tourist attraction. But it's 12,300 feet high. However, that's just 5,336 feet above the city, which is already in the southern Rocky Mountain foothills.
