One of the remaining structures at historic Fort Whipple, a U.S. Army post that served as Arizona Territory's capital prior to the founding of what is now the surrounding town of Prescott in 1864. The fort, named after Union U.S. Civil War general Amiel Weeks Whipple, closed off and on and was set for demolition when the United States declared war on Spain in 1898. Thereafter often deserted, then reactivated, the property was transferred to the U.S. Public Health Service and became a Veterans Affairs hospital. In 2004 it was renamed the Bob Stump Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, after congressman and Arizona native Bob Stump. Photo by Carol Highsmith.
