A relic of the fabulous Comstock Lode days of the mid-1800s in remote Virginia City, Nevada. Now (as of 2022) a nostalgic tourist attraction, the boomtown — then in Utah before Nevada gained separate statehood. Comstock Lode, the first (and spectacular) 2.5-mile-long deposit of silver — and some gold — ore in the United States. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2022.
