A massive granite rock, Independence Rock is approximately 130 feet high, 1,900 feet long, and 850 feet wide. It is located along the
Oregon Trail in
Wyoming. The rock was a prominent and well-known landmark for pioneers traveling through the region in the 19th Century. Many of these emigrants carved their names on the rock. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on January 20, 1961. Photo by
