This natural rock formation called Devil's Gate is located in a gorge on the Sweetwater River a few miles southwest of Independence Rock in Wyoming. The site was significant as a landmark on the California, Mormon, and Oregon Trails, although the actual routes of travel did not pass through the very narrow gorge. Photo by Kathy Alexander.
