Chadds Ford, PA - Farm Buildings Brandywine Battlefield Historic Site

Farm buildings at the Gideon Gilpin farmstead at the Brandywine Battlefield Historic Site in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. This was the location of the Battle of Brandywine, the largest engagement of the Revolutionary War, fought on September 11, 1777, between the Continental Army led by General George Washington and the British forces headed by General William Howe. Nearly 30,000 soldiers fought in a 10-square-mile area. The farm house, owned by Gilpin, a prosperous Quaker farmer, was ransacked after the battle by victorious British forces. Gilpin turned it into a tavern. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2019.
