The historic Frankenberger Tavern building in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, which got its name in 1828 because of a profusion of Conestoga wagon mechanics who set up shop there. These wagons, with their billowing covers, were made in Pennsylvania and became a symbol of the era’s impatient westward on the Oregon Trail and other routes. The log tavern predates the town’s naming by 27 years. It was built to serve travelers on the “great road” from Harrisburg to Carlisle. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2019.
