A tiny chapel at the entrance to Chimayó, a New Mexico village on the "High Road" — a winding route through the Sangre de Cristo mountains to and from the capital city of Santa Fe and the art and shopping mecca of Taos. Chimayó's plazas contain several religious sites, including the El Santuario de Chimayó, a humble shrine that is the destination of an annual pilgrimage of tens of thousands of devout Catholics each Holy Week. This little chapel, though, has a nonsectarian side: local chiles are often sold on the table outside. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
