The sanctuary, filled with hand-painted raredos (altar screens) and other intricate decorations at the El Santuario de Chimayó, a humble shrine in Chimayó, a New Mexico village on the "High Road" — a winding route through the Sangre de Cristo mountains to and from the capital city of Santa Fe and the art and shopping mecca of Taos. The chapel is the destination of an annual pilgrimage of tens of thousands of devout Catholics each Holy Week. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
