The Durango-Silverton narrow-gauge railroad train pulls into Silverton, the seat of San Juan County, Colorado, a legendary silver-rush town of the 19th Century and, at 9,313 feet above sea level, one of America's highest cities. The train, which once carried ore down from the mountains, first to Silverton, then down to Durango, 47 miles away and 2,800 feet lower, is now a tourist attraction. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2015.
