Colorful commercial buildiongs in Silverton, the seat of San Juan County, Colorado, a legendary silver-rush town of the 19th Century and, at 9,313 feet above sea level, one of America's highest cities. The attached building to the right is of the oldest masonry buildings in Silverton, erected in 1880 as the general store of Sherwin & Houghton. It served as retail space for a number of other early-day concerns, including the Iron Mountain Saloon. But Prohibition turned the business into an ice cream parlor. It was empty for many years in the 21st Century until its conversion into a restaurant the Pickle Barrel. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2015.
