The Smithsonian Institution's Arts and Industries Building on the National Mall. When it opened in 1881, it established the Smithsonian as the national museum of the United States. For decades, its featured attractions were exhibits from the 1876 U.S. centennial world's fair, held in Philadelphia. Photo by Carol Highsmith.
