The city's own full-scale replica of Athens, Greece's Parthenon in Nashville, the capital city of the U.S. state of Tennessee and, by reputation and accomplishment, of American country music. Designed by architect William Crawford Smith and completed for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in 1897, the building, housing an art museum that includes casts of the original statues of the building in Greece, is the focal point of Nashville's Centennial Park — now (as of 2021) a public park adjacent to Vanderbilt University. The structure was designed to reflect Nashville's standing as "the Athens of the South." Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
