Rutherford County, TN - Stones River National Battlefield Cemetery

A mournful tribute at a U.S. national cemetery on the grounds of the Stones River National Battlefield in Rutherford County, Tennessee, near Murfreesboro, which became the final resting place for many US soldiers from the American Civil War as well as later conflicts. Nearby, on the Stones River battlefield from December 31, 1862 through January 2, 1863, Union forces eked out a bloody victory over Confederate troops, giving the Federal forces control of central Tennessee. The battle had the highest percentage of casualities of any conflict in what the rebellious Confederacy called "The War Between the States." Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
