The legendary, Spanish-motif Palace Theatre music venue in Louisville, Kentucky’s largest city, took a double hit in 2020, when this image was produced. Like other businesses in Louisville and across much of the nation, it suffered a loss in attendance in revenue due to the ravages of a worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Then its managers boarded its entrance for weeks on end to protect it from vandalism and violence that flared during civil disturbances prompted by the fatal shootings of two black citizens, Breonna Taylor — by city police executing a “no-knock” search warrant of her residence — and David McAtee — shot by a Kentucky National Guardsman while protesting the choking death of another black man in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
