Once a stand alone town, but, long since officially part of Tulsa, Red Fork got its start in in 1883 as a railhead on the Arkansas River. It was named for the nearby reddish fork of the flowing waterway. The town quickly gained fame on June 25, 1901 when the the first oil well in Tulsa County was discovered. The Sue A. Bland #1 was named for owner, Dr. J.C.W. Bland's wife. After oil was discovered, the town grew quickly and for a time, appeared it might grow bigger than nearby Tulsa, Oklahoma.
