Erie, PA - Erie Land Lighthouse

What is now called the Erie Land Lighthouse — formerly, and better known as, the Presque Isle Light — in Erie, Pennsylvania, the state’s fourth-largest city that does, indeed, lie on the banks of Lake Erie — one of the United States’ five “Great Lakes.” The lighthouse, on bluffs overlooking the lake in Lighthouse Park was originally constructed in 1818, becoming one of the first to be built by the United States on the Great Lakes. The current structure was built in 1867 and remained in service until 1880. It was reactivated five years later, then decommissioned in 1899. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2019.
