The classic Mobil Gas Pegasus, or flying horse, sign was a mainstay at the old Route 66 Motors, selling used cars and trucks along a surviving section of the old, two-lane U.S. Highway 66 in Rolla, a small city in south-central Missouri. (The motor company did not survive, however; it was closed by either customer indifference or the effects of a nationwide (and worldwide) pandemic in 2020 and 2021. In Greek mythology, the Pegasus was an immortal creature tamed, and named, by Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
