Grantwood Village, MO - Ulysses S. Grant Historical Site White Haven Plantation
Outbuildings at White Haven plantation at the Ulysses S. Grant Historical site in Grantwood Village, Missouri. Grant, America's 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877, gained acclaim as the Union's commanding general during the U.S. Civil War of the 1850s. Grant first visited in 1843 as a second lieutenant, then moved here to supervise White Haven's slaves. He would later marry the estate owner's daughter, Julia Davis, and still later, more ironically, lead the forces that defeated the southern confederacy, leading to the freeing of its enslaved people.
